Why washable diapers a real responsible alternative?
- 11 May, 2019
Do you use disposable diapers? It is true that they are practical, but do you know the ecological disaster they cause? Unsure if cloth diapering is for you?
The environmental impact of disposable diapers is considerable.
In two years, a child will consume no less than 5 diapers a day. This corresponds to the chopping down 4.5 trees, 600 000 m3 of water, 1 tonne of waste and so on! I let you count for a hundred parents.
By putting the ecological argument aside, manufacturers are not always very transparent about the composition of their products. It is common for studies to discover many chemicals known and recognized as carcinogenic, causing hormonal imbalances, neurological disorders, infertility, weakening of the immune system ...
Last argument, did you calculate how much it cost you to buy one year of disposable diapers for your baby? It is one of the most expensive products.
We started from these observations to propose ecological and healthy alternatives for your child. We accompany you to changing your habits.
BUT THEN WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES?
You probably know them, but they often have a bad image: too complicated, not very beautiful ... The washable diapers are however an alternative more and more common and become very simple to use.
There are 3 kinds of washable diapers:
- AIO (all in 1): all integrated, this layer consists of a waterproof part and another absorbent inseparable. It is by far the least practical and the most complicated to maintain.
- AI2 (all in 2): split into two parts, one impervious and the other absorbent.
- AI3 (all 3): the same principle as the AI2, but the waterproof part is composed of a pocket to slide the absorbent part.
For the AI2 and AI3 layers, there is, therefore, an absorbent part to be inserted into the impervious part. Depending on the type of diapers or your use, this part will be in contact with the baby, so do not neglect it. Favor absorbents composed of several parts (from 4 to 5) with a soft part which dries quickly and a very absorbing heart.
The number of absorbents you need depends on your child's age. Here are the recommendations, you can naturally take less, but it will ask you for more frequent machines:
- Less than 4 months: from 20 to 30 absorbents
- 4 to 10 months: 20 absorbents
- 10 months to 2 years: from 10 to 20 absorbents
Finally, reusable diapers have a much longer life, so we advise you to opt for expandable diapers that can then serve several years.
HOW TO WASH REUSABLE DIAPERS?
I imagine you are looking forward to this point. This is the black spot of these layers, but rest assured, the bulk of the work is done by your washing machine!
Start by emptying the soiled diaper directly into the toilet, then rinse with cold water. Once done, machine wash at 30 or 40 °C. And here they are, ready to be reused. However, be careful not to put softener, bleach, or to put in the dryer.
Wondering what happens if you're not at home? Well, you throw the dirty part in a waterproof diaper bag. You'll take care of it once you get home. You can slip inside an absorbent wipe soaked in essential oil for a more pleasant smell.
